Clinical Counseling
----------------------------------------------------------

MCCS Counseling Services/Family Advocacy Program offers appropriate levels of intervention, treatment, and counseling services to Marines, Sailors, and their families. In order to assist resolving personal and family problems, clients are provided counseling, victim advocacy, information/referrals, and support— to include prevention and education services.

Counselors are available to assist service members and/or their family members with individual, marital, and family counseling. Clinical Counseling services are intended to be solution-focused, dealing with well-defined problems that are flexible to brief intervention and rehabilitation. Clinical counselors assist clients on identifying their problems, and developing a collaborative plan for solving them.

Mission
----------------------------------------------------------

Counseling Services supports the Marine Corps mission by positively impacting:

  • Mission Readiness:
Preventing or alleviating stress factors enable Marines to focus on their duties. Strengthening individual coping skills and enhancing self-esteem can lead to improved job performance.
  • Retention:
Reducing stressors within the military lifestyle can influence a service member's decision to stay in the Marine Corps. Providing services to family members enables them to adjust and accept the challenges of Marine family life.
  • Quality of Life:
Counseling Services supports the Marine Corps philosophy of "taking care of its own." The ability to cope and problem solve is key to quality of life issues.
  •
    Goals
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    1. To strengthen individuals by assisting them in the problem-solving process.
    2. To increase clients' competence and confidence in their abilities to handle Marine Corps lifestyle stressors.
    3. To ensure personal and family issues do not distract from operational readiness.

    Length of Services Delivery
    ----------------------------------------------------------

Counseling addresses issues on a time-limited basis. These services are
    provided by appointment only.

If more than eight sessions are
required, the clinical provider may request an extension of up to four additional sessions. If further services are necessary, the counselor will assist the client in accessing appropriate civilian services utilizing TRICARE
    options.

Family Advocacy Program (FAP) cases are generally more complicated and may require longer-term services for successful outcomes. Some problems (such as spouse abuse and child abuse) are not issues that can be easily resolved in a few sessions; however, no matter the duration, FAP counseling will remain solution-focused.
